And feces. They don’t always tell you that part, either.
This year likely marks some internetly anniversary for me, although I’m uncertain which one really counts: fourteen since my first website (a Geocities abomination) seventeen since my entry into the world of BBSing and corequisite MUDding; twenty-five since the acquisition of my first computer (a Tandy CoCo 2), which was precipitated by my earliest adventures on Prodigy via my grandmother’s office computer (I was a big fan of that Sherlock Holmes game, and ran up the phone bill accordingly).
I’ve scattered my various interests all over the Internets for more than a decade now, and have periodically attempted to collect “all” of the scribblings and scratchings I’d made, a mammoth task, perpetually unaccomplished.
One of my first BBS handles was “renaissancewoman”, more an aspiration than anything, but I’ve discovered that it actually fits me better than I thought. I really *do* have a range and depth of interest in enough areas of study that the moniker fits.
I’m not going to attempt to compile the Universal Theory of Myself again. It’s completely fruitless. But I am going to use this space, for whatever I like, whenever I can. With mobile Internet and apps like Twitter and Instagram, I can actually collect my current self with very little effort at all.

Here are some things that happens to a dude when he first starts to speak up about feminist issues:
He discovers that women in his life whom he would never have associated with the word “feminism” have strong opinions about the things that he’s talking about. Because while we have the luxury of perceiving these things as not being about us, and thus not relevant to our lives, every woman he knows has had to consider what she’d do if she got pregnant when she didn’t not plan to. Every woman he knows has been talked down to by a man who wasn’t as smart or capable as she was. Almost all of them have been treated poorly or made uncomfortable by some dude at some point who saw getting into her pants as a prize to be won. Even women who seemed like just one of the dudes begin to share experiences that he never would have imagined that they’d had, because doing so around him begins to feel safe.
